Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES)

NMES is a modality that uses mild electrical stimulation to elicit muscle contractions through electrode patches placed on the skin. This allows us to build muscle strength when physical activity is restricted or when a patient is physically unable to perform functional movements on their own. It also helps reduce pain and increase circulation.

NMES for the neurological patient

At Stride we often use NMES in patients who may be too weak to stand or walk. Often these patients have intervertebral disc disease or have had surgery to try to restore neurological function after a disc herniation. In some cases, dogs with peripheral neuropathy can also benefit from NMES.

NMES for the orthopedic patient

After orthopedic surgery, it is not uncommon for muscles or muscle groups to go on strike. NMES can be used to help muscles regain proper function by giving them a bit of a jump start when dogs are hesitant to use them on their own volition. NMES can also help to reduce pain and inflammation by increasing circulation to the area that it is applied.

How do you perform NMES?

To ensure that the electrodes of the unit are making good contact with your dog’s skin, we use safe conducting gel that is applied to your dog’s fur/skin. In some cases we may need to shave fur at the locations where we need to place electrodes.

How do dogs respond to NMES?

NMES can sometimes cause a sensory response and/or surprise some dogs, as their muscles contract involuntarily.  We will always work to be sure we are getting the appropriate treatment while maintaining a comfortable session.

How long does it take?

Each NMES treatment takes between 5-15 minutes, depending on each patient’s condition and tolerance level.

Can I do NMES on my dog at home?

Yes! We often recommend this modality be done at home with some training and instruction. Often, the hardest part is getting dogs to stay where we need them.
