Functional Longevity
Is your "Pre-Teen" trying to tell you something?
At Stride, we are firm believers in the “old” saying ‘An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Implementing a functional exercise and pain management program before more severe or total loss of function occurs is the best way to move forward into senior and geriatric years.
Many times these changes happen between the ages of 8 and 11 years of age depending on breed and medical history.
If you are seeing more than 3 of these symptoms it’s probably a good time to give us a call!
- Change in overall posture
- Change in ability to navigate challenging surfaces like tile or wood floors
- Change in posture while urinating or defecating
- Less tolerance of being approached by other dogs, especially if familiar
- Change in the speed of getting up from laying down
- Change in voluntary engagement with familiar/loved family members
- Toe nails that are not uniformly worn down or are worn down more than usual
- Increase in body weight
- Change in preference of sleeping surface from soft to firm/hard
- Loss of muscle mass
- Stiffness that takes longer to resolve or warm out of after "normal" activity
Senior Wellness Overview
Services we offer for our aging patients are always individualized. We take into consideration current function levels, cognition and emotional well being, and of course, pain or discomfort.
Our experienced, caring veterinarians have a special interest in pain management and will discuss available options to help your dog feel their best. We know that if pain is well controlled, function and strength will follow.
Our compassionate and knowledgeable physical rehabilitation staff are absolute pros when it comes to teaching your senior dog safe, functional exercises that focus on proper form so that maximum benefit can be achieved at each session.
Hydrotherapy is also a wonderful modality for your “pre-teen” or senior pet and our gentle approach will have them feeling confident and safe while they rebuild strength and stamina.
We love it when our clients participate in their senior pet’s home exercise program because we see the difference it makes when done in conjunction with the work we do at Stride. We understand that daily focus on specific exercises has much added benefit to quality of life and relationship development between you and your dog.
